Translation of Matthew’s After-Show Chat (from )Thank you for watching. That was my vocal cover of “Fukurou san” by Three-san. Do you like owls? (“Furkurou” is Japanese for owls. It also means “no hardship”.) When I was a child, I liked owls very much. I had longing for the bird. Yes. Do you remember the owl from Harry Potter? The one Harry keeps…a homing pigeon. A pigeon……?! A homing owl. Hedwig! Isn’t he cute? He cocks his head like this (Matthew mimics Hedwig’s head movement.) There was a time in my life I wanted to keep an owl. But back then, I didn’t even dream that it was possible to keep an owl. I couldn’t ask my mother or father to get me an owl. I was fuming in my mind in frustration. But I wanted to get close to an owl. The solution I came up with was to mimic one. I mimicked a cry of an owl and said “whoo-hoo, whoo-hoo” endlessly. But! This mimicking of an owl is actually really good for vocal training for singing! In vocal training, this mimicking of an owl is practiced. So, the mini-me…the young Matthew trying to sound like an owl led to the present; me delivering my singing to you. The plot took a few decades to come to fruition. What a clever bird I am!
